The accused knew that he was working for Russian intelligence and that he was motivated to help it for free by his sympathy for Russia.
In the German city of Düsseldorf, a German army reservist was tried on charges of providing secret military information to Russia.
According to the dpa news agency, prosecutors allege that the 65-year-old retired lieutenant colonel, identified only as Ralph G. under German confidentiality rules, has been working for Russian military intelligence, the Russian GRU, since 2014.
It is reported that the defendant worked for an American company and supplied the GRU with information from public and non-public sources, including private contact details of high-ranking German military officers.
According to the prosecutor, he also provided the GRU with “an overview of the security and defense policy of the United States and its Western allies.”
Federal prosecutors allege that the defendant knew he was working for Russian intelligence. To help her, apparently for free, he was motivated by sympathy for Russia, the agency noted.
German military counterintelligence suspected Ralph G. of espionage in 2018, but his house was searched only two years later.
The press service of the regional court of Düsseldorf reported that the accused partially admitted the charges against him in the run-up to the trial. The defendant’s lawyer said his client would also publicly respond to the allegations during the trial.
Recently, several people suspected of working for Russian intelligence have been identified in Germany.
