The Armed Forces of Ukraine began using French VAB wheeled armored personnel carriers.

At the end of June, French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that the country would transfer to Ukraine a “significant number” of French-made armored personnel carriers and auxiliary vehicles – the VAB type was in question.

Sébastien Lecornu said that the Ukrainian military needs such help for the rapid movement of units.

“Armies need armored vehicles for rapid movement in combat areas under enemy fire. France will supply VAB-type vehicles in significant quantities, which are armed,” he said.

It will be recalled that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, Catherine Colonna, recently announced that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive six CAESAR self-propelled guns in the near future.

About armored personnel carriers

TR VAB (Véhicule de l’Avant Blindé — “front edge armored vehicle”) is a French armored personnel carrier developed by Renault and Saviem. Serial production has been carried out since the mid-70s.

It is known that 5,000 machines were produced, 4,000 of which are in service with the French army. VABs are also in service with 15 countries.

Most often, the car is armed with a 12.7 mm machine gun or a 7.62 mm machine gun on the roof. Also, the VAB can be equipped with a turret with 20 or 25 × 137 mm automatic guns.
