A new regulation regarding the use of expired, lost or stolen Ukrainian driver’s licenses is coming into effect in the EU, the Regional Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine informs.

From now on, it is possible to use a Ukrainian driver’s license in the EU without the need to exchange it for the entire period of stay, and not just for six months.

In addition, old-style driver’s licenses, which are issued only in Cyrillic without an expiration date, without an additional certified translation, or an international driver’s license are now valid.

It is also allowed to drive a car with an expired document. This is relevant for certificates issued for the first time for 2 years.

In addition, it is possible to obtain a temporary (for the period of stay under protection) EU model driver’s license in case of loss or theft of a Ukrainian one without passing exams, it is enough to check whether there really were driving rights in Ukraine, and whether a person is physically and mentally capable of being a driver.

These changes only affect persons who benefit from temporary or adequate protection in the EU.

According to the new rules, the competent authorities of the EU countries can check the validity of the Ukrainian driver’s license using the “Diya” portal and on the website of the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which also has an English version.

The new rules were proposed by the European Commission on June 21, adopted by the Parliament last week and the EU Council on July 18. They enter into force five days after publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
