On the website of the Office of the President of Ukraine, a petition to replace the Odessa monument to the Russian Empress Catherine II with a sculpture of the American gay porn actor Billy Herrington received more than 25,000 votes. Now Vladimir Zelensky must consider this appeal of concerned citizens.
Note that the petition received the required number of votes in less than two months.
The authors of the petition indicate that the demolition of the monument to Catherine will be “a rejection of the sad Russian heritage and a loud statement that Odessa is not some provincial town of the Russian Empire.” Note that on the website of the Office of the President there are several similar, but less eccentric petitions with demands to demolish this monument.
According to the intention of the authors of the petition, Billy Herrington should be depicted in one of his classic images – behind the bar with a bottle of beer in his hand.
This image, in their opinion, will be “a clear signal that Ukraine supports the LGBT community.” In addition, the new monument will become a new tourist mecca and an impetus to the development of the popular culture of Internet communities.
Also, the figure of the popular actor can become a favorite place for Odessa students, who “after successfully passing the session will be able to drink beer with Billy Herrington.”
Among other things, the authors of the petition admit that this is simply funny and fun.
We note that Billy Herrington became more popular in the USA and Japan in the mid-2000s, and in Ukraine and neighboring countries his fame began in the late 2010s.
The actor and a group of his colleagues (Danny Lee, Mark Wolf and others) became the heroes of the popular Internet meme “hachimuchi” (from the Japanese word that translates as “punished big man”).
An anthology of films with their participation, among which “Subdued”, “Lords of the Locker Room”, “Tales from a secluded place” and several parts of the “Muscular Fantasy” series is a vivid example of the low-budget gay porn genre of the 1990s and the first half of the 2000s. They are distinguished by absurd plots, bright and memorable dialogues and hyperbolized images of male sexualization, which have long become the property of Internet forums. Images and quotes of Harrington and his colleagues inspire people to write poems and songs, create parodies and video collages.
In addition to popular love, Herrington also achieved professional recognition. In 2000, he became the “man of the year” according to the American porn production company Colt Studio, and in 2002 he was awarded the “Best Group Sex Scene” award according to the Adult Erotic Gay Video Awards for his participation in the film “Subdued”.
Billy Herrington died in a car accident on March 2, 2018. In the last years of his life, he often toured, arranged meetings with fans and autograph sessions, largely due to his Internet popularity.
There is no information about Billa Herington’s visit to Odessa.

I feel so uncultured 😉 I’ve never heard of the guy. Considering all the events in Odesa the last several months (or in a thousand years before that) there are many other events to memorialize. How about a memorial to the Russian Warship?! It would be good for tourism and people can stand at the shoreline and pretend they are giving the Russian nazis the finger?!

Catherine II did help found several prominent Ukrainian cites, and I didn’t really know much about her till I looked her up. She did quite a bit of good but she was no angel.
