US to announce purchase of medium- to long-range surface-to-air missile defense system for Ukraine

(CNN)The US plans to announce as soon as this week that it has purchased an advanced, medium-to-long range surface-to-air missile defense system for Ukraine, a source familiar with the announcement tells CNN.

President Joe Biden, who is currently meeting with G7 leaders in Germany for a summit primarily focused on Ukraine, announced recently that the US would provide Ukraine with “more advanced rocket systems and munitions” as its war with Russia grinds on. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is slated to virtually address Biden and other G7 leaders on Monday.

In response to requests by Ukrainian forces, other military assistance is also likely to be announced this week, including additional artillery ammunition and counter-battery radars. Ukrainian officials have asked for the missile defense system, known as a NASAMS system, given the weapons can hit targets more than 100 miles away, though the Ukrainian forces will likely need to be trained on the systems, a source said.

The US has been steadily announcing additional security assistance for Ukraine. Last week, the Biden administration announced an additional $450 million in military assistance for Ukraine, giving it four more multiple launch rocket systems and artillery ammunition for other systems.

And earlier this month, the Biden administration said it was providing an additional $1 billion in military aid to Ukraine, a package that includes shipments of additional howitzers, ammunition and coastal defense systems.

CNN reported last week that US assessments of the war increasingly envision a long and punishing battle in the eastern part of Ukraine, with high personnel and equipment losses on both sides.

US officials believe that Russian forces plan to maintain intense attacks in the east, characterized by heavy artillery and missile strikes, with the intention of wearing down Ukrainian forces and NATO resolve over time.

For Ukraine’s part, its military has been burning through Soviet-era ammunition that fits older systems, and Western governments have been facing a tough decision on whether they want to continue increasing their assistance to the country, something Biden has already pledged to do.

“We will continue to lead the world in providing historic assistance to support Ukraine’s fight for freedom,” the President wrote in a New York Times op-ed last month.

    • Yes it’s great. But with the benefit of hindsight, putinazi troll propagandists were saying on their sewer TV for at least 18 months that it was time to bomb Ukrainian cities. Obviously they were preparing the ground for the putinazi public. I never believed it was possible at the time. How hopelessly wrong I was!
Biden and Boris, once intel confirmed that putler’s Holocaust was going ahead, should surely have prioritised air defences for Ukraine’s key cities?
Despite the rape, child murder, torture and all the other depravities of the orcs, firing missiles into apartment blocks has a unique terroristic hatred.
We could have helped them so much more. Now it’s the time to do everything possible to help these poor people.
I’m beginning to hate most of the world; with the exception of course of the US, UK, Pribaltika, Czechia, Poland and Slovakia.

      • I think soon we will find out if the Ukrainians trained on the anti air missile systems in secret.
If they will be delivered within a few weeks, we can be ascertain this was planned a long time ago as this requires months of training.

This anti-air missile system is awesome and has a great range and is much more mobile than the S-300 and even Patriots which are probably placed far from the frontlines.

      • So do I, Scradge. Most of the world is composed of moronic, primitive, backward-thinking, human-rights-abusing states.

  1. I know I am changing my ideas, but I am slowly suspecting the U.S. administration has a plan.

I think they are not announcing weapon deliveries long before they are being sent.

I mean, I don’t believe the HIMARS only required a few weeks of training, so this has probably started before the media was even talking about them.

That is why they only sent 4 and a week later they increased the number.

I guess the drones now are also in the training phase, but it takes some months so I suspect we will soon suddenly hear an announcement and then they will be delivered shortly.

I have the feeling a lot is happening behind the scenes and that they do not announce the delivery of weapons long before, as it is uncertain training will be done in time.

Slowly I am getting more optimistic about the course of the U.S.

    • I remember one case when the Ukrainians showed the Americans new ways to use their counter battery radars. And everything I’ve seen by the trainers is the Ukrainians pick up the training in about half the time expected.

    • I think the same thing. I think that the US and maybe others too are being very secretive about weapon deliveries. This is essential, seeing that the cockroaches will always try to disrupt those deliveries.

  2. We appreciate this greatly, although it could have happened much sooner, having thus saved many lives and kept many structures from being destroyed.
At any rate, this will change many things in the upcoming weeks and months. The mafiosi will be prevented from sending more death and destruction our way.

What is your opinion?
