Muratov said the proceeds would go directly to UNICEF to help children displaced by the war in Ukraine.

Online trading began on June 1, which coincided with the celebration of International Children’s Day.

The medal was sold to an unknown bidder over the phone.

Asked why he chose UNICEF as the beneficiary, Muratov said: “It is very important for us that this organization does not belong to any government. It can work for the government. There are no borders for it.”

In an interview with The Associated Press ahead of the auction, Muratov said he was particularly concerned about children orphaned by the war in Ukraine. “We want to give them back the future,” he said.
