Ukraine expects a logical and fair response from the UN and UNESCO to deprive Russia of its membership.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that no other state, except Russia, has destroyed so many sights in Europe .
He wrote about this in Telegram .play video
“Today, Russian artillery again hit the Svyatogorsk Lavra in the Donetsk region. The Monastery of All Saints was destroyed. It was consecrated back in 1912. It was first destroyed during the Soviet era. Subsequently, it was rebuilt. And now it was burned down by the Russian army,” the president said.
Zelensky recalled that the same week, on Wednesday, Russian shells exploded right in the cells of the monks of the Lavra, as a result of which four people died and four more were seriously injured.
He specified that Svyatogorsk has been under fire since May.
“The invaders know exactly what object they are shelling. They know that there are no military targets on the territory of the Svyatogorsk Lavra. They know that about 300 laymen, including 60 children, are hiding there from hostilities. But still, the Russian army is shelling the Lavra, like the rest of Donbass. Like any other territory and any other object of Ukraine that they can reach. They don’t care what exactly they turn into ruins,” the head of state stressed.
The President noted that on May 31, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine appealed to UNESCO with a demand to deprive Russia of membership in the organization.
“Ukrainian diplomacy is consistently working on this. No other state, except Russia, has destroyed so many monuments, cultural and social facilities in Europe since the Second World War. Every church burned by Russia in Ukraine, every school blown up, every destroyed memorial proves that Russia has no place in UNESCO. What can we talk about with a barbarian state, with a terrorist state? About which artillery shells are better to destroy historical heritage? “, – he added.
Zelensky noted that Ukraine expects a logical and fair response from the UN and UNESCO.
“This is the United Nations, and its charter does not provide for association with terrorists. Russia must be completely isolated, it must be held accountable for its crimes,” the president stressed.
The head of the OPU Andrey Yermak, in turn , stressed that the destroyed All Saints Skete was a place of pilgrims and tourists.
“Russia should be deprived of its membership in UNESCO, and it will definitely be punished for all crimes,” he wrote.
He also noted that the Russians want to go to Slavyansk.
“Russia needs to be stopped, for this we need more weapons from Western partners,” he concluded.
Recall that on June 1, Russia shelled the Lavra in Svyatogorsk, as a result of which 2 monks and a nun were killed. Another 5 people were seriously injured. Later, one of the seriously wounded died.
On May 9, the invaders destroyed the Svyato-Georgievsky Skete of the Svyatogorsk Lavra with several rocket attacks.
