German Foreign Minister: it will take months to supply promised air defense systems to Ukraine

It will take months for Germany to supply Ukraine with the German IRIS-T SLM air defense systems, said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during a speech in the Bundestag.

When asked about the delivery of IRIS-T SLM to Kyiv, which was previously announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Baerbock said: “Yes, it will take months.”

The Minister explained the delay by the fact that the weapons will be supplied by the manufacturer Diehl directly to Ukraine, and not from Bundeswehr warehouses.

At the same time, the German Foreign Minister noted that Berlin should prepare for long-term support for Ukraine, because, according to her, Putin has changed his strategy and now, instead of an “imminent victory”, is betting on the depopulation of the Donbas and the destruction of its infrastructure.

The IRIS-T SLM system has a range of 40 km. It allows to shoot down combat aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, rocket artillery, drones, anti-radar missiles at an altitude of up to 20 km.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany intends to supply Ukraine with its most modern IRIS-T air defense system, multiple launch rocket systems, newest radars and self-propelled howitzers.

  1. I am not blaming her, she is very much in favour of sending more arms to Ukraine.
In fact I think she is the driving force behind this all while Scholz is resisting as much as he can.

I think she basically calls his bluff: the weapon they will send has not been produced yet so they cannot send it from German stocks. Even with the best will in the world it would take several months, as you cannot produce such a system in a day, especially as it did not reach mass production yet. But Scholz did not mention this.

She is our sole ally in a government that is swarming with pro-Russians and appeasers.
Note that Russia or Nord Stream 2 was not mentioned in the government agreement, as it was something the Greens and the two other coalition partners including the treacherous SPD could not agree upon.

If the Greens were agreeing on it, there would have been something in favour of Nord Stream 2 in the agreement, but there wasn’t anything like that.

I must say that on the air defense field Germany has not much to give, as it does not produce any long range anti-air system apart from the one that was only recently developed. And I don’t think any nation could give a Patriot missile system without permission from the U.S. as it is an extremely sensitive system. It was not without reason that Turkey did not get them and bought the S-400, as the Americans did not trust the Turks.

That does not mean of course I am not blaming the Germans: where are the Leopards?! Where are the self-propelled anti-air guns they promised? Or the Phz 2000?

I think at this point we only have the U.S. to blame for not providing with proper air defense, as they are the only Western country that can produce a long range air defense system. I legitimately think sending the IRIS system is the best Germany can do in this regard, because they will even give it to Ukraine before the Bundeswehr will get one.
