Russian ambassador hints some Kremlin officials want war to end: reports

Russia’s ambassador to the US hinted at a split in the Kremlin Sunday — as NATO declared Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine is not going to plan, according to reports.

Anatoly Antonov, a military officer and diplomat, implied during an appearance on state-run TV that some powerful people inside the Kremlin are ready to give up the brutal invasion, which began more than two months ago.

The 67-year-old senior diplomat — who insisted he’s not among those willing to fold — said some forces want to move back troops and “repent.”

He added that US officials are covertly giving the Kremlin the terms of negotiations — including moving back troops — in order to stop the fighting.

“The Americans are pushing us into negotiations, but with certain conditions,” he said, according to the UK Metro. “I would specify three of them.”

“First, to stop military action as part of the special military operation. Second, to move our troops back to where they were before 24 February,” he said.  The third is “to repent for everything we have done.”

But he stressed that the Russian military won’t back down.

“Naturally we are saying firm and clear, and we are unambiguously sure of this — at least the Russian diplomats that work here there will be no such capitulation. Never!” he said.

“We are firmly convinced — and it would have been harder to work without this certainty—  that all tasks set by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief will be fully completed. We will never surrender, and never go back.”

His comments came as NATO’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, warned that Russia’s invasion is going south, the BBC reported Sunday.

Moscow’s attempt to capture the eastern Donbas region has “stalled” — which could lead to Ukraine winning the conflict, he said.

“Russia’s war in Ukraine is not going as Moscow had planned,” Stoltenberg said while speaking at a meeting of Nato foreign ministers.

“They failed to take Kyiv, they are pulling back from around Kharkiv, their major offensive in Donbas has stalled. Russia is not achieving its strategic objectives,” he said.

Stoltenberg’s assertion came after an attempt by the Russian army to gain ground in parts of eastern Ukraine, and after Moscow’s forces changed its invasion strategy in the age after setbacks near Kyiv.

  1. “We are firmly convinced — and it would have been harder to work without this certainty— that all tasks set by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief will be fully completed. We will never surrender, and never go back.”

This guy must be watching RT. The orcs failed to take Kyiv and Kharkiv, resulting in humiliation and mass destruction of their forces. I would like to hear his response when the scum are kicked out of Kherson too.

    • He’s an evil pig, but he’s almost certainly right. They won’t give up until their economy is crushed, their people starving and their military pounded into the dirt.
Unfortunately the above is going to take a hell of a long time and isn’t yet even certain unless the allies start taking their jobs much more seriously. As usual they expect Ukraine to achieve miracles with the bare minimum of help.

      • The house of cards might be starting to crumble. I’m sure there are a few level headed Russians in power, who can see where this is going. At the moment they are outnumbered by the war criminals in charge, if enough start to oppose Putin’s mad war, the whole lot could collapse very quickly.

    • All the more reason to continue the slaughter of the orcs until we finally hear the words, I surrender. I don’t care if it is the Donetsk basin, Bolgorod, St. Petersburg or Siberia, the denazification should continue. Plus everything in their wake should have a referendum of independence.

  2. Stoltenberg is a defacto enemy of Ukraine. Under his despicable “leadership”, Ukraine has been lied to, consistently led up the garden path, betrayed by Russia collaborators France, Germany and Hungary and kicked in the teeth.
Ukraine does not need this bunch of arseholes, it needs the Budapest signatories to finally honour their obligations to the fucking letter.
When this demonic war is finally over, hopefully the war crimes trials can begin and the reparations bill assembled.
It would also be highly appropriate for Macron, Hollande, Sarkozy, Merkel and Scholtz to be brought in front of the courts for feigning the role of honest broker whilst all the time colluding with a murderous fascist power.

  3. I keep seeing terms of negotiation that Russia move back to Feb 24 position. To me it’s a non starter. Get the fuck out of our country completely. PERIOD. Someone needs to put this talking point of Feb 24 position to an end.

    • As I said the other day, the negotiations begin from a point that Russia’s thugs are withdrawn completely outside of the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine. That is the nonnegotiable minimum.

  4. Russia lost the Crimean war, but did not stop fighting until they couldn’t fight anymore. I expect Russia to do the same here. There will be little left of Russia at the end.

  5. “Russian ambassador hints some Kremlin officials want war to end: reports”

Those officials see the writing on the wall. They want to save what is still salvageable of their ratty army. We will continue slaughtering the cockroaches until they go scurrying back from where they came from, even without any orders from the top.

What is your opinion?
