Sweden to apply for NATO membership on May 17

The Swedish government intends to formally apply to join NATO on Tuesday 17 May.

This is reported by the publication Svenska Dagbladet .

An official letter with Sweden’s application to join NATO will be delivered on Tuesday in Brussels to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg or his representatives.

The corresponding decision will not be made public officially, since the ruling Social Democratic Party has not yet completed an internal discussion. It is reported that since the opponents of the country’s accession to NATO remained in the minority, it is expected that on the evening of May 15, officials will announce the approval of the NATO course.

Earlier, a similar statement was made by the President and Prime Minister of Finland Sauli Niinistö and Sanna Marin.

It should be noted that the accession of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Alliance means the refusal of this state from the policy of neutrality, which it has adhered to for more than 200 years. The last time the Swedes fought in 1814 – with the Norwegians.

  1. Nato is a despicable organization that sees fit to block Ukraine yet allows Sweden and Finland to leapfrog Ukraine and jump straight in.
    No honour, no integrity; appalling.
