The United States may confiscate the assets of Russian oligarchs to finance aid to Ukraine.

According to Reuters , this was stated by the leader of the Democratic Party in the US Senate Chuck Schumer.play video

“Ukraine needs all the help it can get, and at the same time, we need all the assets that we can pool to give Ukraine the help it needs,” Schumer said.

He said Congress will work at the request of the Biden administration for additional funding sources for the $33 billion aid package to Ukraine.

In particular, it is planned to allow the United States to confiscate the assets of Russian oligarchs and send money from their sale directly to Ukraine.

As Schumer noted, the process of confiscation of property that belongs to the oligarchs in the United States will be simplified by allowing the speeding up of cases in federal court.

According to him, it will also be recognized as a criminal offense the knowing possession of income received from “corruption transactions” with the Russian government.

“The time has come for Russian oligarchs who have been sanctioned to be held accountable for their ill-gotten gains,” Schumer said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, United States President Joe Biden called on Congress to approve a bill to allocate an additional $33 billion to support Ukraine.

The funding will be used to provide Ukraine with weapons, ammunition and other military assistance, as well as direct economic and humanitarian assistance.
