Construction of a floating LNG terminal is under way in Alexandroupoli, northern Greece, to help the EU phase out Russian gas.
The inauguration ceremony will be attended by European Council President Charles Michel on May 3 at the invitation of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Interfax reports .
Also arriving will be Serbian President Alexander Vucic, Bulgarian and Northern Macedonian Prime Ministers Kirill Petkov and Dimitar Kovachevski.
“The LNG floating terminal in Alexandroupolis will help achieve the EU’s goal of phasing out Russian gas as soon as possible, as decided by the European Council in March,” said Council of Europe spokesman Barend Leits.
According to him, the project “will offer new sources and routes of natural gas supply and increase the reliability of supplies to Greece, Bulgaria and other countries in the region.”
The new floating terminal with a capacity of 5.5 billion cubic meters per year should start operating at the end of 2023. The project operator Gastrade SA announced in January that the gas could be distributed to the markets of Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Northern Macedonia, Moldova and Ukraine.
The co-owners of Gastrade SA are Elmina Kopelouzu, GasLog (owns and operates LNG vessels), Bulgaria’s Bulgartransgaz, Greece’s DEPA and DESFA.
The country already has one LNG terminal – Revithoussa LNG by DESFA, 45 km from Athens. In 2021, it received 2.4 billion cubic meters of gas.
