In Russia, a Ukrainian priest and almost 150 captured soldiers are being tortured in a pre-trial detention center.

This was reported by the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova on Facebook.

“A citizen of Ukraine, the rector of the Odessa Holy Trinity Cathedral, Vasily Vyrozub, is illegally held in pre-trial detention center No. 2 of the Belgorod district of Stary Oskol (RF),” she said.

She clarified that the priest of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine was placed in a punishment cell, where he was tortured and accused of espionage.

According to the Ombudsman, the Russian military captured the priest along with other participants in the humanitarian mission of the Sapphire rescue ship.

“In addition to Father Vasily Vyrozub, there are almost 150 Ukrainian servicemen in the pre-trial detention center, who are also being tortured by representatives of the pre-trial detention center administration,” Denisova notes.

The Ombudsman appealed to the UN Commission of Inquiry into Human Rights Violations during the Russian military invasion of Ukraine and the expert mission, created by the OSCE participating States in accordance with the Moscow Mechanism, to take into account these facts of Russia’s violation of the rights of citizens of Ukraine.
