Kazakhstan will not be a tool to circumvent sanctions against Russia.

This was stated by Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Kazakhstan Timur Suleimenov in an interview with Euractiv .

According to him, Kazakhstan will comply with the sanctions regime imposed on Russia.

“Kazakhstan will not be a tool to circumvent sanctions against Russia by the US and the EU. We will comply with the sanctions. Despite the fact that we are part of the Economic Union with Russia, Belarus and other countries, we are also part of the international community. Therefore, the last, what we want is secondary US and EU sanctions against Kazakhstan,” the deputy head of the presidential administration said.

He stressed that despite Russia’s “wishlist”, Kazakhstan respects the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

“Of course, Russia wanted us to be more on their side. But Kazakhstan respects the territorial integrity of Ukraine. We have not recognized and do not recognize either the situation with Crimea or the situation with Donbass, because the UN does not recognize them. We will only recognize decisions adopted at the level of the United Nations,” Suleimenov said.

He also noted that Kazakhstan is not afraid to call Russia’s aggression against Ukraine a war.

“We have no problem calling a spade a spade. Russia has decided to introduce a law banning the word ‘war’. They call it a special military operation. But in Kazakhstan we call it the way it is, unfortunately,” Suleimenov said.

Sounds almost too good to be true from a country like Kazakhstan. Can they be trusted?
