An ammonia leak occurred at the Sumykhimprom chemical industry plant .

This was announced by the head of the Sumy OVA Dmitry Zhivitsky.

“Attention! 03/21/2022. 04.30 am. Leakage of ammonia from Sumykhimprom! Destruction zone with a radius of about 5 km!”, he wrote.

“Currently, the affected area is about 2.5 km. The direction of the wind and the settlements that were under threat: the village of Novoselitsa. The emergency teams of the plant and the State Emergency Service are working. There is no threat to Sumy yet (the direction of the wind is not on the city),” he added.

What to do in case of an ammonia leak?

Zhivitsky also recalled that ammonia is a colorless gas with a sharp, suffocating odor, explosive, and toxic. It is lighter than air, so for protection it is necessary to use shelters, basements and lower floors of houses.

If you smell ammonia, you should breathe through a moistened gauze bandage (preferably moistened with a 5% solution of acetic or citric acid).

In case of ammonia poisoning, it is recommended to take the victim to fresh air, give warm milk with baking soda, put on a cotton-gauze bandage moistened with water (preferably 5% solution of acetic or citric acid).

If ammonia gets into the eyes, rinse with water or wipe with petroleum jelly or olive oil. In case of skin damage – wash with clean water, make lotions from a 5% solution of acetic or citric acid.
