Ukrainian intelligence has several options for nuclear blackmail by Russian occupiers.
Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Defense Ministry, said this in an interview with Ukrinform .
“We have information about the development of two options. They will choose which one, it depends solely on them. The first is a large-scale burning of radioactive forests, a radioactive cloud will immediately rise and go in the direction the wind blows. The second is the use of artillery against a nuclear storage. The result is It will be the same as in the first case, as in the second case, the Russian leadership aims to blame Ukraine, and precisely its “Nazi”, “neo-Nazi” formations, which actually do not exist here,” Budanov said.
He drew attention to the fact that this is not the first time the Russians have resorted to this type of blackmail, because during the period of this war the Russian Federation attacked the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and the Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology with weapons.
According to him, in this way the invaders want to intimidate us because of the failure in the offensive.
Budanov stressed that any nuclear blackmail would be nuclear terrorism, ecocide and environmental catastrophe, from which Belarus and Ukraine would suffer the most.
Russian attack on Ukrainian nuclear power plants
On February 24, as a result of a Russian armed attack, all facilities of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, located in the exclusion zone, were taken under control by Russian-fascist troops.
On March 9, as a result of the hostile actions of the invaders , the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was completely de-energized .
About 20,000 spent fuel assemblies are stored at the storage facility for spent nuclear fuel – 1. They need constant cooling, which is only possible if there is an electricity supply. If it is not there, then the pumps will not perform cooling. As a result, the temperature in the cooling pools will increase, soaring and the release of radioactive substances into the environment will occur. The radioactive cloud can be carried by the wind to other regions of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and European countries.
In addition, ventilation at the facility will not work. All personnel who are there will receive a dangerous dose of radiation.
Also, the fire extinguishing system does not work, and this is a huge risk in case of a fire that can occur due to a projectile hit.
Currently, hostilities continue there, which makes it impossible to carry out repairs and restore power supply.
Yesterday, March 9, the IAEA stated that the security situation at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was “not critical.” The international agency has argued that the volume of cooling water at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is sufficient to effectively remove heat without the need for electricity.
