Hungary condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but will not allow Hungarian families to pay for this war, so anti-Russian sanctions should not extend to the energy sector.

This was  announced by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban  in London on Tuesday, March 8, after talks with his British counterpart Boris Johnson.

“It is clear that ending this war through negotiations is in all our interests,” Orban said, stressing that every effort will be made to restore peace in the coming weeks.

The Hungarian Prime Minister noted that the expansion of sanctions on the energy and oil and gas sectors would place a disproportionately heavy burden on Hungary.

“We condemn Russia’s military attack and war, but we will not allow Hungarian families to pay the price of war,” Orban said.

In his opinion, sanctions should not apply to oil and gas imports. He said that Hungary buys most of its oil and natural gas from Russia, and stressed that 90 percent of Hungarian families heat their homes with gas. The head of the Hungarian government also added that the economy of his country cannot function without oil and gas.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden announced a  US ban on Russian oil and other energy imports, intensifying a pressure campaign against Moscow in retaliation for its invasion of Ukraine.
