The European Union may increase the number of Russian banks that will disconnect from SWIFT - Borrell

The European Union may increase the number of Russian banks that will disconnect from SWIFT.

This was announced by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell at a press conference following an extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on March 4, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

“We have also considered here what new package of sanctions can be resolved in the coming days. For example, we can increase the number of Russian banks that will be disconnected from SWIFT, but we have not made any specific decision on this or that bank,” Borrel said.

According to him, the EU has asked the technical authorities to study more banks.

“We’ll see. We can increase the number of banks, we can go deeper in financial sanctions,” Borrell said.

At the same time, he called for thinking about the consequences of the sanctions that have already been imposed.

“Yes, there will be more sanctions, they are being studied. We have not made any decision today, but it is important to implement what we have decided,” Borrel added.

In addition, the head of EU diplomacy drew attention to the need for Russian oligarchs to avoid the consequences of sanctions and stop tax evasion.

“We must find them and freeze their assets, because the Russian regime is gaining its wealth from corruption and tax evasion. We must fight this and turn off the cash flow tap that finances this senseless war,” Borrel said.

Earlier it was reported that the European Union officially disconnects seven Russian banks from SWIFT and bans the supply of euros in Russia

I guess since this war has ONLY gone on for 14 years we are still in the “study” phase. That’s relatively fast for the EU…….
