In Bangladesh, five Russians who worked on the construction of a nuclear power plant died in 12 days

Over the past 12 days, five Russians have died in Bangladesh. All of them worked at the Rooppur nuclear power plant under construction near the city of Ishvardi. This was reported by the news agency United News of Bangladesh (UNB). The RTVI channel drew attention to the news .

On January 28, 48-year-old Aleksey Barchenko died at the Ishvardi Medical Center. On February 2, 40-year-old Alexei Shakirov died in his sleep. On February 5, 48-year-old Pavel Shchukin “after a sudden illness” died in the same medical facility as Barchenko. On the same day, the body of 59-year-old Vasily Tolmasov was found near his apartment on the 14th floor of the house where employees of the nuclear power plant under construction live. On February 6, 45-year-old Alexander Vortonikov was found dead in his apartment in the same building.

Shchukin was a mechanical engineer at Trest RosSEM . Vortonikov worked at  NIKIMT-Atomstroy . Both companies are part of the engineering division of the state corporation Rosatom. The exact places of work of the rest of the Russian citizens who died in Bangladesh are not specified.

Police spokesman Ishwardi said that the autopsy of the bodies of the deceased did not reveal anything suspicious. “One of them used drugs , the other had a heart disease. But we are investigating all deaths,” the UNB source said.

Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear power plant in Bangladesh. The contract for its creation was signed in 2015. The nuclear power plant is being built by the engineering division of Rosatom. The station will consist of two power units, the launch of the first of them is scheduled for 2023, the second – for 2024.
