The Republicans of the US Senate intend to submit for consideration a bill that will declare Ukraine a “NATO plus” country and provide for a check on the expediency of declaring Russia a state sponsor of terrorism.

This is reported by the Voice of America .

NATO + status will allow the United States to expedite consideration of the sale of some American defense services and goods to Ukraine.

“Diplomacy has little chance of success if it is not approached from a position of strength. Vladimir Putin should take into account that Congress will not tolerate the restoration of the Russian sphere of influence and will not allow the abandonment of Ukraine and our other allies and NATO partners in Central and Eastern Europe, “said Michael McCall, a leading Republican on the House Foreign Relations Committee.

The bill also provides for military and diplomatic support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and the immediate imposition of sanctions against Nord Stream 2.

The bill rejects Russian proposals for a moratorium on the deployment of medium-range missiles in Europe and requires the United States to formally determine whether Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism.

This bill will significantly increase funding for the supply of lethal assistance to Ukraine, in particular, anti-aircraft and anti-ship weapons needed to contain Russia.

Blocking the supply of weapons to Ukraine through NATO

In December, Ukrainian Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov accused Germany of blocking the supply of weapons to Ukraine through NATO, despite US warnings of a possible Russian invasion.

“They are building the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and at the same time blocking our defensive weapons. This is quite unfair,” Reznikov said.

This was preceded by a statement made by former German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in June 2021. The minister said that the supply of German-made weapons to Ukraine could negatively affect negotiations with the Russian Federation on the need to hold meetings in the “Normandy format”.

Germany vetoed the sale of anti-drone rifles and anti-sniper systems to Ukraine through the NATO Support and Supply Agency, according to the BILD, at the initiative of Merkel .

The current German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock confirmed that Berlin is looking for other options for de-escalating the Russian Federation: “Our priority now is to prevent further escalation. This can only be achieved through diplomacy in the Normandy format and through the NATO-Russia Council and within the OSCE.” …

  1. “The bill rejects Russian proposals for a moratorium on the deployment of medium-range missiles in Europe and requires the United States to formally determine whether Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism.”

Should have happened years ago, but we’ll need to see what the present POTUS will do. I’m not confident he’ll do any of this.

  2. The US must provide weapons to Ukraine outside the useless entity that is NATO. It would also be easy to form a new defense organization to include not only Ukraine but any other country that is NOT frightened of mafia land. This leaves out the usual decrepit little Putin butt sniffers Germanystan, frog land, Orbanistan, spaghettiland and so forth.
