Next year, the United States will begin transferring Mark VI high-speed combat patrol boats to Ukraine, which will strengthen Ukraine’s military presence in the Sea of ​​Azov.

According to the Commander of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, these boats of the coastal zone are designed to respond quickly to changes in the situation. They are fast, maneuverable, unobtrusive, multifunctional, have powerful navigation systems. That is, it is a universal platform that can quickly deliver a small reserve to one point or another. They can also be equipped with small mine action systems to maintain a favorable operational regime to ensure the main actions of the fleet.

It will be recalled that on June 17, 2020, the US State Department approved Ukraine’s request for the sale of 16 modern Mark VI patrol boats and related weapons under the Foreign Military Sale (FMS) program (32 MSI Seahawk A2 modules; 40 MK44 Bushmaster II guns and etc.), with a total estimated value of $ 600 million.

It is worth noting that the Ukrainian “Islands” will receive the same combat module .

According to the first announcement, Ukraine was to receive six Mark VI boats free of charge as part of US assistance. Ten more, if she wished, she could buy at her own expense.

However, in March 2021, the United States agreed to transfer to Ukraine, as part of logistical assistance, two additional Mark VI boats, so the Navy will receive at least eight boats free of charge.

Mark VI 26-meter aluminum boats are equipped with a power plant with two MTU 16V2000M94 diesel engines and water cannons, which provides a maximum speed of 35 knots and a short-term maximum speed of 41 knots. The range of 30 knots is about 600 miles.

The boat can be equipped with remotely controlled 25-mm M242 Bushmaster automatic guns, 12.7 and 7.62-mm machine guns. By the way, the 30-mm Mk44 Bushmaster II chain guns ordered by Ukraine, manufactured by Alliant Techsystems, are a further development of the 25-mm M242 Bushmaster guns and 70% use the same parts. At the same time, a 20% increase in caliber gives a 50% increase in firepower.
