On December 18, Russia officially withdrew from the group of countries participating in the Open Skies Treaty , the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The Foreign Ministry accused the United States of “collapsing” the treaty and made the American authorities responsible “for the degradation of the treaty regime.” The department believes that without the participation of the United States and Russia, the effectiveness of the treaty will sharply decrease, since “the area of its application will decrease by about 80%.”
In 2020, the United States officially notified its partners of its decision to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty. They explained this by the fact that Russia violated the terms of the treaty, banning observation flights over Moscow, Kaliningrad, Chechnya and near the borders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Moscow denied violations and, in turn, blamed Washington for them.
In January 2021, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the start of preparations for withdrawing from the Open Skies Treaty. On May 19, the State Duma approved the denunciation of the treaty, on June 2 – the Federation Council.

After all, what good is the Open Skies treaty when you can’t look at Moscow, Kaliningrad, Chechnya, Abkhazia or South Ossetia? Typical Putler, Open Skies is for me, not for thee.

Typical Putin. Limit actions under the treaty of your opponents, then blame them for collapsing the treaty. He is still living by the lessons he learned as a KGB thug.
