US Senate approves defense budget with $300 million in support for Ukraine

In total, the draft law provides $770 billion in military spending

The US Senate has approved a draft defense budget for 2022 in the amount of $778 billion. The bill provides the allocation of $300 million to support Ukraine as European Truth reported.

89 legislators voted in favor, 10 opposed. The $770 billion draft budget is being sent to President Biden’s signature after weeks of delay.

The annual defense bill provides funding and policy for the Pentagon. It has been passed by Congress on a bipartisan basis annually for the past six decades.

The draft law provides $770 billion in military spending, $25 billion more than President Biden requested and about 5% more than last year’s budget. It also provides $4 billion for the European Defense Initiative and $150 million for security cooperation in the Baltic States.

The document provides the allocation of $300 million to support Ukraine, which is $50 million more than President Biden requested, including $75 million for lethal weapons.

However, the draft budget did not include an amendment that provided for sanctions against the operator Nord Stream 2 AG. It was proposed by Republican Senators Bob Menendez (edit – error by AP and 112, Menendez is a Democrat) and Jim Risch.

As we reported earlier, 30 anti-tank launchers of Javelin missile systems and 180 missiles arrived in Ukraine from the USA. This was announced by the adviser to the head of the President’s Office Oleksiy Arestovych on December 10.

  1. I would like to know who stripped out the amendment to apply sanctions on NS2. Both of these Senators are huge Ukraine supporters and their committees have been unanimous most of the time. I wonder if the White House was involved here….
