Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov suggested that the European Union finance the maintenance of refugees in Belarus and thereby stop the flows of migrants provoked by the Lukashenka regime to Poland and Lithuania.
He stated this at a press conference on November 9, quoted by the Russian agency TASS .
Lavrov complained that the EU allegedly adheres to “double standards” in the fight against illegal immigrants.
“You cannot apply different standards to Italy and Poland, when Brussels is considering how Warsaw and Rome behave towards migrants who go to these countries. Countries where refugees come from should also be perceived the same,” the Russian diplomat said.
He clarified that it is about financial support to keep migrants.
“Why is it also impossible to help Belarusians, who have certain needs, so that refugees, whom Lithuania and Poland do not want to let on their territory, somehow live in normal conditions? But these people do not want to stay in Belarus or Turkey, they want to Europe, the one that has campaigned and advertised its lifestyle for many years. You have to be responsible for your actions, “Lavrov says.
Scandal over illegal migrants in Europe
Lithuania and Latvia, as well as Poland and Estonia accuse the Belarusian authorities of using illegal migrants as a weapon in the so-called hybrid war against the EU.
The Polish parliament voted to legalize the expulsion of migrants at the border. The amendments to the law stipulate that migrants detained on the spot, illegally crossing the border, must leave the territory of Poland. They can also be banned from entering the country for a period of six months to three years. Following the amendment to the law, parliament also approved the construction of a € 353 million border facility to be equipped with motion sensors.
Vilnius, Riga, Warsaw and Tallinn called on the UN to take action against the Belarusian leadership by encouraging foreigners to illegally cross the borders of the European Union. Several migrants have already died on the border between Poland and Belarus.
Lithuania has begun construction of a 508-kilometer physical fence on the border with Belarus to stop illegal migrants from entering the territory of the neighboring country.
Germany launched an investigation into Alexander Lukashenko due to the influx of illegal immigrants . Yesterday it became known that hundreds of migrants from Belarus went to “storm” the Polish border .
