Hundreds of Russian officials received housing subsidies as needy. Among them are the head of the Ministry of Education and deputy ministers of sports, economy and culture.

Russian officials are actively using the opportunity to receive subsidies for the purchase of housing. Since 2012, according to a joint investigation by Vital Stories and Transparency International Russia , about 650 Russian civil servants have received housing subsidies.

Among those who took advantage of the subsidy are civil servants who clearly do not fit the definition of needy – they already have expensive real estate. So, for example, financial assistance for the purchase of housing in the amount of 16.6 million rubles, according to the investigation, was received by Sergey Kravtsov in 2016. In 2016, he headed Rosobrnadzor, and now holds the post of Minister of Education. At the time of receiving the subsidy from the Kravtsov family, according to the authors of the investigation, there were three apartments, and his two minor children used an apartment with an area of 146.2 square meters.

Also, subsidies for housing in different years, write “Important stories”, was received by the Deputy Minister of Sports Odes Baysultanov (30.8 million rubles in 2017), who owned, among other things, nine residential buildings at that time. Among the recipients of financial assistance for the purchase of housing were also Deputy Minister of Culture Alla Manilova (25 million rubles in 2016) and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Sergei Nazarov (17 million rubles also in 2016).

The press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, who was asked by journalists to comment on the investigation of Important Stories and Transparency, said that officials with high incomes “simply cannot use such support programs” (quoted by TASS ). Subsidies for the purchase of housing, according to Peskov, “are used by just those officials who do not have the financial resources, do not have the ability of others to start housing, and so on.” At the same time, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation admitted that he had not read the material of “Important stories” and did not know what was written in it.
