Taliban talks were held in Moscow on Afghanistan. Sergei Lavrov calls Taliban “respected delegation”

On October 20, at the President Hotel in Moscow, talks on Afghanistan were held, in which representatives of the Taliban movement and 10 countries of the Asian region took part, Interfax writes.

Prior to the talks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with the Taliban behind closed doors. After her, Lavrov said that he had discussed with representatives of the movement the fulfillment of their promises to form a government with the participation of various political forces.

“We call on the Taliban movement – and we talked about this with the distinguished delegation – to strictly follow the line of preventing anyone from using the territory of Afghanistan against the interests of third countries, primarily against our immediate neighbors, the countries of Central Asia – our friends and allies,  Lavrov said. … He noted that the Russian authorities “are satisfied with the level of practical interaction with the Afghan authorities.”

During the talks, the issue of international recognition of the Taliban was raised, said the Russian president’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov. “Of course, this moment will come someday. But it will come when, and this was said to the Afghan delegation, when it begins to fulfill most of the expectations for the international community, which concerns both human rights and inclusiveness issues, ”Kabulov said.

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the meeting with the Taliban in Moscow, said that “direct contacts are aimed at better understanding what is happening in this state, what are the intentions of the Taliban.” “De jure, the Taliban are not recognized by the world powers, nor are they recognized by the Russian Federation. But de facto they are the leadership of Afghanistan, ”the Kremlin spokesman said.
