At the age of 84, the first director of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Viktor Bryukhanov, died. This was announced on Facebook by the Chernobyl NPP enterprise, which is engaged in the decommissioning of the power units of the station.

Bryukhanov became the director of the future Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1970 and first supervised its construction and then its operation. After an accident in 1986, he was suspended from work and detained several months later.

Bryukhanov was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the case of a safety violation at a nuclear power plant. He was released early in 1991, after which he worked for some time at the station as the head of the technical department.

Bryukhanov expressed disagreement with the official version that the main cause of the accident at the nuclear power plant was violations by the personnel. “How did we manage it: when we finished all the checks, we pressed the Stop button, [the reactor] exploded instead of stopping. I am not a nuclear physicist. I am a heat power engineer. Simply – the manager. Therefore, only from my bell tower I can assume: if the reactor protection system had been properly designed, the accident would not have happened,  he said in an interview.
