In the Orenburg region, ten people died from poisoning with surrogate alcohol

Update: The government of the Orenburg region has reported ten deaths from ethanol poisoning. Another one who used surrogate alcohol is in intensive care. “According to preliminary information, even a small amount of alcohol consumed is fatal. It was sold in different containers and in different places, ”the 

message says  .

In the Orenburg region, nine people have died after consuming surrogate alcohol, the Investigative Committee for the Orenburg region reported.

The deceased lived in the village of Krasnochabansky, Dombarovsky District. With symptoms of ethanol poisoning, they were taken to a local hospital on October 6 and 7, where they died. The dead were between 36 and 73 years old.

A criminal case was initiated on the production and sale of goods that do not meet safety requirements, which inadvertently resulted in the death of more than two persons.

Investigators of the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia in the Orenburg Region, in cooperation with employees of the operational services, are conducting investigative and procedural actions aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the crimes committed, searches in the places of alleged sale of alcohol-containing liquid, its samples are seized, the necessary examinations are assigned.INVESTIGATIVE COMMITTEE FOR THE ORENBURG REGION

In December 2016, 78 people died in Irkutsk after drinking Hawthorn bath concentrate. In August 2020, seven defendants in the Hawthorn poisoning case were sentenced to seven to nine years in prison.

After the Hawthorn poisoning, restrictions on the sale and production of alcohol-containing liquids were actively discussed; a year later, liability for violations in the production and sale of alcohol-containing products was tightened by law. 

In November 2020, seven people died in Yakutia after drinking methyl alcohol-based hand sanitizer. The authorities of the republic then banned the sale of alcohol-containing liquid, which caused the death of people.
