In Odessa, found 29 “shooting pits” with the remains of victims of political repression of 1937-1938.

According to the press service of the mayor’s office, on September 17, the stage of field research was completed on the territory of the 6th km of the Ovidiopol road.

The work began in July after receiving the appropriate permission from the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy.

It is noted that at this stage, the task of the combined group of volunteer researchers from Odessa, Dnieper and Krivoy Rog was to determine the boundaries of burials without exhumating the bodies: the very fact of the presence of remains here was established, and artifacts were collected that testify to the burial, and, possibly, personalities. killed.

According to the representative of the group, candidate of historical sciences Tatyana Samoilova, practically the entire land plot with an area of 4.76 hectares has been examined.

“Every two meters, trenches were made – pits … 29” shooting pits “were identified. Six of them were opened in 2007-2008. The rest – for the first time,” Samoilova said.

The work was carried out according to the methodology of the International Committee of the Red Cross. A geodetic survey was carried out, the boundaries of the “shooting pits” were tied to the site plan and marked. The remains of the executed people were left in the ground before exhumation, the pits were conserved.

As noted by the Odessa mayor Gennady Trukhanov, the territory is fenced and will be guarded until the next stage of work.

The working group is currently planning to move the remains from the site of the former dump (where excavations are underway) for reburial. To do this, you must obtain the appropriate documents for exhumation.

As UNIAN reported earlier, according to the head of the Southern Interregional Department of the Ukrainian National Institute of Memory Serhiy Gutsalyuk, in the region of the 6th km of the Ovidiopol road in 2008, one of the so-called “shooting pits” of the NKVD was uncovered. The remains of more than 1,000 dead were removed from it, who were subsequently reburied.

According to the Odessa mayor’s office, the number of people buried in the area of the 6th km of the Ovidiopol road ranges from 5 thousand to 20 thousand people.

According to a KGB certificate from 1964, the bodies of people who were shot in 1937-1938 are mostly buried here.

According to Gutsalyuk, for the first time the issue of executions carried out by the NKVD in the suburbs of Odessa was raised during the Second World War – in 1943, the Romanian fascists (Romania was an ally of Nazi Germany during the Second World War) carried out a partial exhumation. Then more than 100 bodies were found with the same traces of a bullet wound – in the back of the head.

  • Reparations required from the terror regime. For this, many other historical atrocities and the many new atrocities that have been inflicted upon Ukraine since 2014.
