The Investigative Committee of Russia has opened the criminal case on the “ecocide” due to the block of the North Crimean Canal by Ukraine as Interfax reported citing representative of the committee Svetlana Petrenko.
She stated that the block of the North Crimean Canal influenced the quality of water used for drinking and household needs as the exceedance of the maximum permissible norms of saltiness and self-scaling negatively influence the health of people.
According to the Russian investigation of the so-called “entrance of Crimea in the composition of Russia (temporary occupation), unknown persons in the territory of Ukraine and standing against the reunion of Crimea with Russia, in violation of the paragraphs of the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques made a decision to inflict harm to the economic, social and ecological situation of the Crimean peninsula through a block of the North Crimean Canal”.
“During the past six years, the saltiness of Syvash increased three times. The populations of almost all considered species of the animal world, including those put in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation and the Red Data Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, had decreased, some of them can be considered disappeared. She added that the criminal case was opened.
On July 22, Russia appealed to the ECHR with a complaint against Ukraine. It is the first time ever when Russia files an interstate complaint to the ECHR. The canal is an engineering work of mankind that supplied water to reservoirs in Crimea for the purpose of domestic consumption. Russia invaded and has no right to demand the resources of another country to sustain its occupation. The problem is entirely at Putin’s feet. He is obligated to find the resources to support his occupation without demanding the resources of the country he decided to invade.
