US asked 24 Russian diplomats to leave the country
The US authorities have handed over to Russia a list of 24 Russian diplomats who must leave the country by September 3. Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov announced this in an interview with The National Interest.
The Russian ambassador noted that it will not be possible to replace these diplomats, since the American authorities have tightened the procedure for issuing visas.
In April, following the imposition of new US sanctions, Russia and the United States each expelled ten diplomats. In May, the Russian government included the United States (as well as the Czech Republic) in the list of “unfriendly” countries that are prohibited from hiring Russian citizens to work in their diplomatic missions. The ban on Russians working in American consulates went into effect on August 1. The United States was forced to lay off 182 employees.
