Germany’s Laschet threatens Russia with shutting down Nord Stream 2 if it harms Ukraine

If Russia again commits aggressive actions against Ukraine, then Germany will take measures at the national level and advocate penalties from the entire European Union

The head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), candidate for Chancellor of Germany Armin Laschet warned Russia about sanctions, which might include total closure of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in case of harm or aggression against Ukraine. The politician said this in an interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, the full version of which is expected to appear on Monday.Related: Germany criticizes “frivolous promises” on Ukraine’s joining NATO

“If Russia again commits aggressive actions against Ukraine, then Germany will take measures at the national level and advocate penalties from the entire European Union,” German newspaper Die Welt quotes an excerpt from an interview with Laschet.

According to the politician, in this way, Germany will prevent Russia from using the pipeline as a geopolitical weapon.

The leader of the Conservatives believes that “the security of Ukraine should be a priority for German foreign policy.”

“The German-American agreement (on Nord Stream 2 – ed.) gives us a tool through which we can jointly bring Russia to justice for destructive activities,” added Laschet.

Earlier this month, Laschet noted that Germany needed the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, however “this pipeline must not be used to blackmail Ukraine, or the Baltic States or Poland.”

As reported before, the representatives of German opposition urge the government of Germany to reconsider the position toward the further construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Such a statement was announced after the dispersal of protests in support of oppositionist Alexei Navalny in Russia.

The United States and Germany have reached a deal that will allow the completion of a controversial Russian gas pipeline to Europe without the imposition of further US sanctions.

  1. BS. Why would a Putin loving kraut put the interests of Ukraine before Russia? He is against “demonizing” Putin for the Russian annexation of Crimea. So can we trust this guy, not a chance.

  2. If Russia closes the pipline throught Ukraine (without further aggression) its aggression too. Then you will do nothing about it, Easy words!

      • The aggression has already started, the flow through Ukraine has been diminished for months if not years. Politicians are often strong with their words when they’re not written down by legislation, we will see his true colors AFTER the vote. I often say Leopards don’t change their spots, I doubt he will change his either.
