On July 15, the European Court may ban the use of more than 50% of the OPAL and EUGAL pipelines, which are terrestrial extensions of the Nord Stream-1 and Nord Stream-2 pipelines in Germany, which could strengthen Ukraine’s position in maintaining natural gas transit through Ukrainian gas transportation system.

The chairman of the state company “GTS Operator of Ukraine” Sergey Makogon reported about it on the page on Facebook .

“We look forward to the decision of the European Court of Justice on July 15, which may affect the use of the OPAL and EUGAL pipelines – the extension of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 bypass pipelines through Germany. A positive decision may restore the 50% limit, which will not allow “use Nord Stream at full capacity,” he wrote.

German gas pipeline OPAL

The German OPAL gas pipeline, built in 2011, is a land extension of the Nord Stream-1 gas pipeline, which supplies gas from Russia to EU countries. The total length of the gas pipeline is 470 km and the capacity is 36.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

EUGAL gas pipeline

The EUGAL pipeline is a 480 km long pipeline from the Baltic to the German-Czech border. The gas pipeline is integrated into the gas transmission network of Germany and allows to transport gas from both Nord Stream-1 and Nord Stream-2.

Nord Stream-2

The Nord Stream 2 project envisages the construction and operation of two branches of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the coast of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany.

The construction of the gas pipeline bypassing Ukraine was planned to be completed by the end of 2019 together with the already existing Nord Stream-1. Its construction was suspended due to US sanctions against contractors, but resumed in February 2021. Nord Stream 2 AG decided to complete it on its own.
