The FSB offered Ivan Safronov a deal with the investigation – in exchange for a conversation with his mother. He has not been allowed to communicate with her for almost a year.

The journalist Ivan Safronov, who is in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center on  charges of treason , was persuaded to confess guilt in exchange for a call from his mother. Safronov’s lawyer Dmitry Katchev said this to Open Media.

According to him, such an offer to the journalist came from the FSB investigator Alexander Chaban, who knows how important it is for Safronov to communicate with his mother.

“The investigator told Ivan that he could spend the whole day on Safronov if he was ready to make contact with the investigation. As a bonus for an open conversation, he promised to allow me to call my mother directly from the office and talk to her, “said Katchev. Safronov refused the offer, adding that he would not forgive Chaban for this, the lawyer added.

Ivan Safronov has not been allowed to communicate with his mother for almost a year, referring to the fact that she is a witness in his criminal case. In October 2020, investigator Chaban did not allow Safronov to call his mother on her birthday, arguing that the conversation “could be used by the accused for the covert exchange of information, performing other intelligence missions of the foreign special services aimed against the security of the Russian Federation and to oppose the investigation”. Later, the journalist was also not allowed to speak on the phone with his 12-year-old niece.
