Biden: Ukraine must clean up corruption to be admitted to NATO

President Biden on Monday said Ukraine must root out corruption before it can become a full member of the NATO alliance, something Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pushed for.

“It depends on whether they meet the criteria. The fact is, they still have to clean up corruption. The fact is, they have to meet other criteria to get into the action plan. And so school’s out on that question. It remains to be seen,” Biden said at a press conference at the NATO summit.

“In the meantime, we will do all that we can to put Ukraine in the position to be able to continue to resist Russian physical aggression,” he continued. “And it will not just depend on me, whether or not we conclude that Ukraine can become part of NATO. It will depend on the alliance and how they vote.”ADVERTISEMENT

Zelensky told news outlets earlier Monday he was looking for a clear “yes” or “no” from Biden on whether Ukraine would be admitted as a full member of NATO. The issue has become increasingly urgent as Russia amasses troops along the Ukrainian border and tensions escalate between the two nations. Russia illegally annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

Given Russia technically has invaded Ukraine, other NATO nations would be compelled to defend Ukraine should it join NATO under Article 5 of the organization’s treaty, which stipulates that member nations consider an attack on one ally an attack on all allies. Biden said that dynamic would not preclude Ukraine from being admitted as an alliance member.

Ukraine has had a long history of issues with corruption, which Zelensky has pledged to clean up since taking office a few years ago. Former President Trump repeatedly claimed he was concerned about corruption in Ukraine when he was impeached for pushing for the country to investigate President Biden and his son Hunter Biden in 2019.

The president spoke to Zelensky over the phone before leaving for Europe last week. Ukraine is likely to be at the forefront of Biden’s meeting on Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin

“I shared with our allies what I’ll convey to President Putin: that I’m not looking for conflict with Russia, but that we will respond if Russia continues its harmful activities and that we will not fail to defend the trans-Atlantic alliance or stand up for democratic values,” Biden said at Monday’s press conference.

  • If Ukraine have to rely on Zelensky to fight corruption before being allowed to join NATO, it will never happen. Corruption has got worse under Zelensky, not better, and I have no doubt Zelensky has been told this many times. So Zelensky might as well keep his mouth closed regarding NATO, until he starts the fight against the people that got him elected.

  • This is total bullshit from ‘Mr 10%’, AKA ‘the big guy.’
Corruption? How come that rule did not stop countries equally or more corrupt than Ukraine joining? Does anyone seriously think that Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey, Croatia etc are not all as bent as fuck? Furthermore, none of them could hold a candle to Ukraine when it comes to fighting ability.
This is a serious blocking maneuver which will be welcomed by those wonderfully non corrupt putler grovellers the frogs and krauts.

    • It’s just the latest excuse. Ukraine could turn into a squeeky clean corrupt free country, it would make no difference. The Krauts and Frogs would find more excuses to stop Ukraine.

  • I agree. A country raped by nazi invaders from Muscovy deserves to have real patriotic rulers who counterbalance the aggression by wiping corruption and oligarchy, and making Ukraine a modern, progressive and prosperous example of democracy. That is the least a government can do, instead of increasing corruption and selling the country off to the oligarchs, turks and arabs.

“President Biden on Monday said Ukraine must root out corruption before it can become a full member of the NATO alliance…”
This is your typical cheap, political diarrhea called circumventing or diversion. I didn’t expect anything else to be exuded from the old asshole’s foul mouth. It is known that Ukraine will never be able to root out corruption. Indeed, no country is free of corruption. It’s an impossibility. Thus, this is a cheap way of saying, too bad, so sad. Maybe in another lifetime.

    • This has always burned me up since the 2014 invasion. We keep hearing about supporting Ukraine and recognizing borders and sending help, etc….then without fail it is tied to rooting out corruption. Well, truth is most of the corruption comes from fucking Moskali in Ukraine! Wouldn’t it be easier and longer lasting if we didn’t have to fight a war with Putin AND a war with Putinitis?

      • As if there is no corruption in the US or EU, and on a scale Ukraine could never reach.

        • Yeah, not long ago several CIA and FBI traitors got fired for scheming against Trump. That’s the worst kind of corruption.
How the hell can Biden even use that word after what Hunter did in Ukraine and Moscow?

          • I wonder what the attitude from the West would be, if Ukraine found massive oil and gas reserves in the country? Suddenly corruption would no longer be a problem, everyone is your friend. Maybe I’m being cynical, but not far from the truth I think.

            • Yes I think that’s the truth too. I am depressed but not surprised after the press conferences after meeting with the lying KGB zit. Ukraine hardly came up at all, even with the media. Hell, Syria too and a half million died there. But the media is worried about Navalny and hackers…
