Sen. Portman slams Biden for waiving Russia pipeline sanctions: ‘helps Russia,’ hurts US allies

Sen. Portman says Biden’s decision ‘helps Russia while hurting Ukraine and our European Union allies’.

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, slammed President Biden’s decision to remove the sanctions on the Russian company building the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, calling it a major boon for the Kremlin and a major bane for Ukraine.

Portman, the co-chair of the Senate Ukraine Caucus, tore into Biden for lifting the sanctions on the Russian firm Nord Stream AG and its Vladimir Putin-linked CEO Matthias Warnig, who are heading up the Baltic pipeline project.

“I am opposed to the Biden administration’s decision to waive the congressionally-mandated sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG,” Portman said in a press release Thursday. “This choice is contrary to our national interests, and at an especially volatile period, helps Russia while hurting Ukraine and our European Union allies.”

Portman said there is “clear and concerning evidence” that the Russian company and its CEO are “committing sanctionable acts and should be subject to these sanctions” under American law.

“In addition, the State Department is on record saying that the Biden administration believes the pipeline is a bad idea, will hurt Europe, and is against our U.S. national interests. I, and my bipartisan colleagues in Congress, see this project for what it really is — an attempt by Russia to gain control over its European neighbors through the region’s energy supply,” Portman said.

The Ohio Republican said America needs to “stand with our ally” Ukraine and apply “sanctions, not waivers” to the project in a time “when President Putin continues to place unremitting military, political, and economic pressure on Ukraine.”

“The Biden administration must explain how they will offset the negative strategic impacts of this policy to ensure security of our European partners and allies,” Portman added. “It is clear from this decision that it is time to support a NATO Membership Action Plan for Ukraine.”

The Biden administration cited U.S. national interest as the reason behind the decision to waive sanctions. Portman said this decision will give Russia a big geopolitical win while “hurting” Ukraine and the U.S.’ other allies in the European Union.

Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, also criticized the Biden administration for the move, saying in “defiance of U.S. law, Biden is actively helping Putin build his pipeline.”

“Objectively speaking, the Biden administration is shaping up to be the most pro-Russia administration of the modern era,” Cruz tweeted.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also weighed in, pointing out Biden’s hypocrisy when it came to Russia.

Biden also recently canceled the Keystone XL Pipeline in America, sparking backlash from conservatives.

The White House did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

  1. Congress is still united in support for Ukraine so it will be interesting to see if they can force the Whitehouse to explain how the hell removing these sanctions are good for the USA and her Allies.

  2. The dried dog shit has been in office for only a few months and he has already caused lots of damage to us and our Ukrainian friends. I really hate to think what other damages this varmint may cause in the rest of his term. And, not to mention the big favor he has done for the crime syndicate and fucked-up Germanystan.
It should be clear to even the most ardent Biden fan that he is not fit for office. Even as he speaks, I must think about old people in nursing homes who are more alert and know more what they are talking about, and this without the danger of falling asleep … both the asswipe Biden and the audience.

  3. Ted brought it to the point. Biden’s move to cancel sanctions is in sharp contrast to his statements before the 2020 (fake) elections. But then again, i did never expect anything else. Ukraine now wants to connect to the EU energy system, which now means being connected to RuSSia through the back door.

    • The EU as a whole is not Ukraine’s friend. Ukraine should go its own way and make agreements only with countries that are not backstabbers, like Germanystan and frogland and who are not jellyfish, like Germanystan and frogland. This includes refraining from connecting to EU energy system. I don’t know what advantages this will bring to Ukraine. For sure, it will bring increased bureaucracy and paternalism.

      • The plan was to disconnect from the ruSSian system, but now it seems while Ukraine is disconnecting the EU is reconnecting…

        • There you have it. As a matter of fact, mafia land and the EU are considering unifying the IPS/UPS network (electrical grid of the former Soviet Union) with the ENTSO-E (electrical grid of Europe) to form a single synchronous super grid.
