A criminal case was opened against Svetlana Tikhanovskaya on the preparation of terrorist attacks in Belarus

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus has opened a criminal case against the leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and the participants of the project of the former Belarusian security officials BYPOL on the preparation of terrorist acts (Article 289 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus).

“The abovementioned persons tried to carry out explosions and arson on the territory of Minsk and other cities a few days ago. <…> As follows from the materials, the plans of the organizers included accusing the representatives of state authorities of committing actions that create the danger of death of people, “the department said.

The Prosecutor General’s Office added that testimony against the organizers of the terrorist attack was given by “citizen Maleichuk, who was detained red-handed.” A man with this surname was shown on the air by the state TV channel Belarus-1 on March 26 . It was reported that he planned to detonate improvised bombs both in Minsk and in Pechi, a military town in the Minsk region.

The press service of Tikhanovskaya commented on the news about the initiation of a criminal case as follows: “It’s just that nobody laughs at the jokes about Nick and Mike , so the Prosecutor General’s Office is proposing a new meme.” Representatives of the BYPOL project have not yet commented on the case.

On March 25, the Belarusian opposition celebrated Freedom Day – the anniversary of the proclamation of the Belarusian People’s Republic in 1918. There were no large-scale street actions, but  more than 200 people were detained throughout the country . Several hundred more people were detained on March 27 – on that day, the opposition called on Belarusians to take to the streets.

On March 24, BYPOL said that on Freedom Day, the Belarusian security forces were allegedly preparing a terrorist attack in one of the buildings of the internal affairs bodies “as part of discrediting the protest movement.” On March 26, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus reported on the prevention of terrorist attacks in Minsk and Pechi, stating that they were planned by BYPOL. Alexander Lukashenko instructed to submit to the awards policemen who allegedly prevented the attacks.

BYPOL project operates from Poland, Svetlana Tihanovskaya is located in Lithuania. Several criminal cases have been initiated against her in Belarus . The Belarusian authorities demanded her extradition from the Lithuanian authorities. Vilnius replied that “Hell will sooner freeze over” than this will happen.
