Good morning, World! Good morning, Ukraine!
Ukraine marks Volunteer Fighter Day on March 14.
The date was introduced by the Verkhovna Rada in early 2017 to honour the courage and heroism of the defenders of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and strengthen patriotic spirit in Ukrainian society. It was on March 14, 2014, at the height of the Revolution of Dignity, that the first volunteer fighters left Independence Square in Kyiv for Novi Petrivtsi training base.
Thousands of ordinary Ukrainian citizens, abandoning their homes, work and schools, turned their face eastward to counter Russia’s invasion of the Donbas in February 2014. In the spring of 2014, there was a record-breaking turnout at Ukrainian military recruitment offices. Men and women self-organized into battalions and left for the eastern regions.
The courage and dedication of these volunteer fighters helped mobilize forces in the rear and supply the army with weapons.
Слава Україні! Героям слава!
Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!
