The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM) has recorded 15 Grad multiple rocket launchers deployed in violation of withdrawal lines in the occupied areas of Donbas.

The OSCE SMM said this in a report issued on February 23, based on information from the monitoring teams received as of 19:30 on February 22, 2021.

According to the report, on February 19, a mini UAV spotted six multiple launch rocket systems (BM-21 Grad, 122mm) in a training area near Pokrovka (36km east of Donetsk). On February 20, a long-range UAV detected eight multiple launch rocket systems (BM-21 Grad, 122mm) in a compound near Sadovyi (57km south-west of Luhansk) and one multiple launch rocket system (BM-21 Grad, 122mm) in a training area near Miusynsk (62km south-west of Luhansk).

In addition, on February 22, the SMM patrol spotted eight towed howitzers (D-30 Lyagushka, 122mm) in a residential area on the southern outskirts of Luhansk city. All weapons were deployed in violation of withdrawal lines.

Along with this, the SMM observers recorded 21 tanks, 23 howitzers, three surface-to-air missile systems and three mortars in training areas of the Russian occupation forces in Donbas. The weapons were located beyond withdrawal lines but outside designated storage sites.

  1. Training area? Is this something new? Why would dozens of howitzers, grads and tanks be outside withdrawal lines yet called training areas? It seems to me a training area would be far from the front lines in a war.

  2. “All weapons were deployed in violation of withdrawal lines.”
The OSCE has taken note. Now the crickets can start their concert.
