NATO seeks to boost funding for deterrence efforts along borders with Russia

Stoltenberg said China and Russia are at the forefront of an authoritarian pushback against rules-based international order

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg gas suggested increasing NATO’s funding for “core deterrence and defense activities.”

“This would support Allied deployments in our battlegroups in the eastern part of our Alliance, air policing, maritime deployments and exercises,” Stoltenberg said at a press conference in Brussels on Monday ahead of the defense ministerial set to be held February 17-18.

“Spending more together would demonstrate the strength of our commitment to Article 5, our promise to defend each other,” the NATO chief said, adding that it would contribute to fairer burden-sharing.

The Bloc also needs to take “a more global approach to deal with global challenges,” Stoltenberg stressed, noting that “China and Russia are at the forefront of an authoritarian pushback against rules-based international order.”

“So we should enhance our political dialogue and practical cooperation with like-minded partners to promote our values and protect our interests,” Stoltenberg concluded.

Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP) is a NATO-allied forward-deployed defense and deterrence military posture in Central Europe through Poland and Northern Europe through Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, in order to protect and reassure NATO’s Central and Northern European member states on NATO’s eastern flank of their security, as per Wikipedia.

Following Russia’s invasion of Crimea and its war in Donbas, NATO’s member states agreed at the 2016 Warsaw summit to forward deploy four multinational battalion battle groups to those NATO member states perceived to be most at risk of a possible Russian attack or invasion.

  • Time for the next step and forward deployment to the territories illegally occupied by the Aggressor State. Like a shield wall during Medieval times.

  • Best deterrence is Ukraine in Nato.

  • In April 2008, the Nato members promised Georgia that it would eventually join. At the same time it gave full membership to Croatia and Albania. Had it granted membership to Georgia at the same time as those two, putler would not have invaded in August of that year. He did so and the integrity-free Nato members put Georgia on the back burner.
Ukraine had been on the ‘membership action plan’, but Yanuk the putlerite got himself elected with the assistance of Stone and Manafort and promptly withdrew, thus preparing the ground for the invasion just 4 years later. All the death and misery inflicted upon Georgia and Ukraine could have been averted if they had been given membership at the same time as Pribaltika.
Because Nato is run by trash,

    • If Johny Mac would have become president in 2008, both Ukraine and Georgia would have become Nato in 2009/2010, there would not have been a war, no Obama, and no Trump. A totally different world. But the rich elites don’t like harmony, they love Putin.

  • To be truthful, I have less than optimum confidence in NATO. If we withdrew from this organization, it would be effectively dead. It should be reorganized with certain countries excluded, in particular Germanystan, Hungary, Turkey and Italy.
