100 HSE staff members urge to reinstate teacher fired after arrest for retweeting about rally
One hundred employees of the Higher School of Economics wrote a letter to the rector of the university, Yaroslav Kuzminov, urging to renew the contract with teacher Anna Wellicok, who was fired after she was arrested due to a retweet about the rally. This is reported by the student edition of the HSE Press.
“We believe that Anna’s political convictions influenced the decision of the HSE administration to terminate the contract with the employee,” the authors of the letter said.
The signatories expressed the opinion that the decision to fire Wellicock for political reasons damages the university’s reputation and violates several points of the HSE Code of Ethics.
Anna Wellicock has worked as a visiting professor in the Faculty of Computer Science. The contract with her was terminated on February 14 – after she was arrested for 14 days for retweeting the post of FBK employee Georgy Alburov (the court found her guilty of organizing a rally in support of Alexei Navalny on January 23).
The press service of the HSE noted that Wellicock was invited under a civil law contract to give a short course to graduate students. Because of the arrest, the teacher will not be able to conduct four seminars, and it will not be possible to postpone them “due to the intensity of the curriculum,” the university stressed.
