The UN Security Council will convene on February 3 for an informal meeting to discuss the situation with opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was arrested in Russia. This was reported by sources in diplomatic circles in New York, according to Deutsche welle.
An attempt to poison Navalny in 2020 will be discussed during the event. In addition, some members of the Security Council may raise the issue of the current situation of the activist. The discussion will be held in a closed format. The informal status of the meeting allows any member of the Security Council to speak and propose topics for discussion. Russia cannot prevent this.
On January 18, the UN Human Rights Council called for the immediate release of Navalny.
Russia denies any claims from the international community, citing the inadmissibility of interference in internal affairs.
On January 17, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was detained at the Sheremetyevo airport while going through passport control. He returned to Russia from Germany, where he received treatment after poisoning in Tomsk.
According to the oppositionist’s lawyer Vadim Kobzev, Navalny was arrested for 30 days. He is being held in the Matrosskaya Tishina pre-trial detention center in Moscow.
