Gorbachev Urges Biden to Improve Relations With Russia, Extend Key Nuclear Pact

Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader, has urged Joe Biden’s administration to improve U.S.-Russia ties and extend a key nuclear pact ahead of the U.S. President-elect’s inauguration.

“The current condition of relations between Russia and the United States is of great concern,” Gorbachev said in an interview with the state-run TASS news agency published Wednesday, the day Biden will be sworn in as president.

“But this also means that something has to be done about it in order to normalize relations,” he said. “We cannot fence ourselves off from each other.”

Former U.S. President Barack Obama and then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the New START, also called START-3, in 2010. Biden has pledged to extend the treaty, which limits the number of nuclear warheads between the two powers, before it expires on Feb. 5.

“It is necessary to extend the START-3 and it is possible, especially since Biden advocated for it during his election campaign,” Gorbachev said.

As Vice President, Biden was one of the key architects of the Obama administration’s attempted “reset” of U.S.-Russia relations. Gorbachev said he remembered discussing the need to continue the nuclear disarmament process with Biden in 2009.

“The treaty was very important, not so much in terms of the scale of reductions, but in terms of stability and control. Its inspections, notifications and consultation mechanisms are very important; they cannot be breached,” Gorbachev said.

Medvedev himself has called Biden’s pledge to extend the treaty “optimistic” in an op-ed published by TASS last week. The New START’s extension is just one item in a long list of pending issues on the U.S.-Russia political agenda, and relations between the two countries have plummeted to post-Cold War lows in recent years.

Gorbachev said he felt optimistic toward the future of U.S.-Russia ties, pointing toward the Cold War, another difficult time in the countries’ relations. As the last Soviet leader, he played a pivotal role in ending the Cold War, reaching agreements with U.S. President Ronald Reagan on denuclearization and a number of other issues.

“At the Geneva summit, we agreed to establish bilateral working groups on all issues: nuclear disarmament, bilateral relations, humanitarian cooperation and regional issues. There were many issues — no less than now,” Gorbachev said.

  • Stupid old fossil. Russia break all international laws, yet it is the US that has to improve relations with the shithole. How about Muscovy showing they respect international law. Remove their vermin from Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova for a start. Give up the FSB murderers that unleashed Novichok in the West. We all know it will never happen, terrorist states never change, unless the big stick is applied first.

  • Improve? I thought under Trump they had great relations? Obviously not so much. Anyway, get the fuck out of Ukraine and Moldova, stop bombing kids in Syria, stop poisoning people and smuggling heroin through embassies etc, then come back again. RuSSians always demand, but never offer anything substantial in return.

    • Are you ready for Reset 2.0? Then an extension of the one-way START 3? Democrats may be dull but their optimism for repeating failures hoping for a different result is staggering. They fall for it every time.

      • Just watched the Biden inauguration. The speech was the usual sanctimonious pizzle. His eyes looked like slits. Either he was squinting to read the autocue, or something odd was happening with him.
The national anthem was performed by crypto-commie squilionaire Lady Gaga. There were also songs from Jennifer Lopez and Garth Brooks, who is now so fat he looks like Alex Jones. After murdering Amazing Grace he hugged the Bidens, Clintons and Obamas. Maskless.
Credit for these singers for revealing their vocal mediocrity. Without the technical enhancements they normally enjoy, they sounded little better than some idiot at a Karaoke.
Here is a disturbing thing I read that was said by a Democrat! If it’s true, as it probably is, there is a bumpy ride ahead: Rep Cohen on the National Guard :
“I think the guard is 90 some odd percent I believe male, only about 20 percent of white males voted for Biden. You have to figure that the guard which is predominantly more conservative and I see that on my social media, and we know it, there are probably not more than 25 percent of the people there protecting us that voted for Biden, the other 75 percent are in the class that would be the large class of folks who might want to do something and there were military people and police who took oaths to defend the Constitution and to protect and defend who didn’t do it who were in the insurrection. So it does concern me.”

        • This reminds me off an incident around 8 years back. The Who were performing the half time gig at the Superbowl. The officials were horrified when the Who said they wanted to sing live. The officials said nobody sings live, everyone mimes, but the Who got to sing live, and it was one of the best half time performances ever. I’m no fan of the Who, but it shows, talent cannot be manufactured.

The reason these so called stars can’t sing live, all music since 2000 is made through autotune on a computer. The computer is the star, not the singers.

          • Yep, the Who are real pros and real musos. I didn’t like them much until quite recently when I started belatedly listening to their body of work. Similarly with Quo; I bought into the old ‘we only know three chords’ cliche. But on studying them further I found them to be a world class outfit. At least when their astonishingly precise rhythm player Rick Parfitt was still alive. They had a very creative way of using open tunings to get that ‘jangly’ effect. Real pros.

            • I saw the original Quo lineup live in Liverpool in the 70s, they were good. For a group that “only” played 3 chords, they lasted a hell of a long time until Parfitt died.

  • Gorby, you let the SU evaporate, or rather, you were there in the midst of it. That’s a long time ago and your time as a statesman is long over. Enjoy your retirement and spare us your senile blatherings.
Come to think of it, many nationalists and patriots of mafia land hate Groby for allowing the inevitable with the SU to happen. Maybe he wants to earn a few points with certain people before he kicks the bucket.
