Joe Biden nominated former US Ambassador to Russia William Burns as CIA chief
US President-elect Joe Biden has nominated diplomat William Burns as head of the CIA.
In order to take office, Burns will have to be approved by the US Senate.
Burns has worked in the Foreign Service since 1982. From 2008 to 2011, he was Deputy Secretary of State, from 2011 to 2015, he was First Deputy. Since 2015, he has chaired the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
From 2005 to 2008, Burns was the US Ambassador to Russia.
