Belarusian opposition leader Svitlana Tsikhanouskaya is planning to visit Kyiv after Ukraine holds local elections that are scheduled for October 25. She told this in an interview with the Belarusian service of Radio Svoboda.

We are planning a trip to Kyiv in the near future. Right after the local elections,” Tsikhanouskaya said.

In addition, she also thanked Ukraine for its firm position on Belarus and its readiness to support EU sanctions.

I am often asked by the Western partners if Russians understand Belarusian when you start speaking it. I answer: ‘No, they do not, but Ukrainians will understand us. We understand Ukrainian, they understand us. Our languages ​​are a bit closer’,” Belarusian opposition leader added.

As we reported earlier, the countries of the European Union agreed to impose sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko and officials of his regime if the situation in Belarus does not improve.

“The Council strongly condemns the violence employed by the Belarusian authorities against peaceful protesters, and calls for the release of all arbitrarily detained persons, including political prisoners…State the EU’s readiness to take further restrictive measuresagainst entities and high-ranking officials, including Aleksandr Lukashenko,” reads the message.
