Putin recognizes presidential elections in Belarus

Putin believes that the OSCE decided in advance to abandon election observation

Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the elections in Belarus and called them valid. He stated this in an interview with the Russia-1 TV channel, Interfax reports.

“We proceed from the assumption that the elections took place. I did it right away. We recognized their legitimacy. I congratulated Alexander Lukashenko on his victory in these elections,” Vladimir Putin said.

He added that the OSCE’s refusal to observe the elections in Belarus suggests that this was prepared in advance.

“The Belarusian authorities have invited the OSCE to take part in the control over the elections. Why did they not come? And this immediately makes us think that, in fact, a position on the results of these elections has already been prepared. Therefore, someone may doubt results, but I have every reason to doubt that those who doubt were absolutely honest,” Putin said.

As we reported before, on August 28, the mass protests took place in Minsk. The law enforcers detained 265 people, including about 50 journalists.

“The journalists of non-governmental mass media who were going to cover the protest were detained at independence square about 6:00 p.m.,” the message said.
