My Statement on Elections in Belarus

Joe Biden. 11 August 2020

Democracies are built on the simple concept that citizens have a right to elect their leaders and have a say in their country’s future. After suffering systematic repression for the past 26 years under the authoritarian regime of President Alexander Lukashenka, the people of Belarus are demanding their voices be heard.

After a presidential election marred by electoral fraud, citizens peacefully protesting to demand an accurate vote count are now being met with riot police using stun grenades, tear gas, and rubber bullets. The Lukashenka regime has cut internet access, arrested protesters and independent journalists, and tried to muzzle foreign observers. These are not the actions of a political leader confident that he has won a fairly conducted election. But thanks to brave citizens — journalists, activists, and ordinary people documenting these extraordinary events — we know the truth about the assaults on democracy being committed by the regime.

I stand with those who are calling for a transparent and accurate vote count and the release of all political prisoners. I also call on President Lukashenka to respect the rights of peaceful protestors and to refrain from further violence. My administration will never shy away from standing up for democratic principles and human rights, and we will work with our democratic allies and partners to speak with one voice in demanding these rights be respected.

And, before he is even elected president (not saying he WILL be), Biden is already showing signs of being a potentially weak president.
Haven’t we’ve seen much more than enough in the past six years what results can be achieved by “demanding” anything from a dick-tator? Zilch!
Haven’t we’ve seen much more than enough in the past six years what results can be achieved when all “democratic allies and partners” blow the same hot air?
Enough of pumping hot air, enough talking empty words, hollow and void of any real substance.
Enough of lukewarm sanctions, listless responses to attacks on us and on innocent nations, and broken-record-like diplomatic gibberish.
I’m afraid, if this guy should win, we will have another Obumer as prez.

    • Apparently he’s had a rethink. Or his advisers have. Politico reported the following:

“GETTING TOUGH ON RUSSIA: “If Joe Biden wins in November, he would sharply increase shipments of lethal weapons to Ukraine in an escalation of the Obama administration’s policy toward the country, his top foreign policy aides tell POLITICO,” Seligman also reports.

“Specifically, Biden would send weapons that are critical to defending against Russian coastal attacks such as anti-ship missiles and patrol boats, his aides said. Increasing lethal aid would be just one part of a ‘holistic’ approach to pushing back harder on Russian influence in Ukraine, which would include continuing to send U.S. military trainers and stepping up efforts to urge political and economic reform, they added.”
He just appointed Kamala Harris as his running mate. She did at least condemn the occupation of Crimea. But can her integrity be counted on? Last year three women reported being sexually assaulted by Biden and she said she believed these ladies. But that did not prevent her from accepting the appointment! Neither did his incredibly fatuous ‘if you don’t vote for me, you ain’t black!’comment offend her.

Maybe this will come to pass. But, what exactly is an “escalation of the Obama administration’s policy toward the country (Ukraine)”? What is an escalation of blankets, MREs, and broken Humvees?
“In 2014, after Russia annexed Crimea and began arming separatists in eastern Ukraine with tanks, armored vehicles and rocket launchers, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko came to Washington to plead for weapons to defend his country. In an impassioned address to a joint session of Congress — with Biden sitting directly behind him — Poroshenko said his country appreciated the nonlethal assistance he was getting, but declared “one cannot win a war with blankets.
        “The Obama-Biden administration was unmoved.”
Biden, together with Obumer, has a lousy track record regarding Ukraine. Maybe he has learned, maybe he has not. Actions speak louder than hollow words. If Biden wins, I hope that he will keep his word. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? A politician keeping his word…

      • Ukraine needs battleships, F-16’s and Apache helicopters. Interesting that Joe believes one can deter RuSSia, a medium superpower, with some missiles and patrol boats. Americans should be concerned about their safety if this idiot gets elected.

  • Yawn! ‘Accept, publish and implement the true outcome of the elections or face the most terrible sanctions ever thrown at a country!’ is what i would have liked to hear.

  • Did we hear the same kind of reaction from Trump?
