Russian-British media owner Yevgeny Lebedev has been appointed to the House of Lords in Britain.

Queen Elizabeth II conferred Lebedev’s lifetime peerage on Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office said.

Lebedev owns Britain’s Independent and Evening Standard newspapers. His father, Russian oligarch Alexander Lebedev, is co-owner of the independent Novaya Gazeta newspaper in Russia.

In summer 2019, then-Prime Minister Theresa May’s government launched an investigation into his sale of a 30% stake in the Evening Standard and Independent to a Saudi investor.

That summer, he was reported to have entertained then-Foreign Secretary Johnson at a party in his family’s villa in Italy.

Alexander Lebedev, an ex-KGB agent turned business tycoon, was reportedly one of the figures investigated as part of Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee report on alleged Kremlin interference in country’s 2016 Brexit referendum.

  • KGB-agent Member of the House of Lords. Welcome to Britain!

The son of an ex-KGB agent as a member of the House of Lords in Britain…
I do hope very much that the Brits know what they’re doing.

    • It’s a terrible, terrible decision. The slimy maggot has wormed his way into London society, where he espouses liberal politics via his newspapers, yet he has never criticized putler. He even praised the rodent for taking on isis. Which is an out and out lie. Putler was only murdering members of the anti-Assad Alliance.
I like Boris, but this is almost trump-like behavior. I hope that this unbelievably piss-poor decision can be overturned.

That’s exactly what I thought. What in the hell is wrong with the Western politicians??? Are they all on drugs or were they beaten with stupid sticks?

        • Yes it’s really bad. The guy is not an open putlerite, but should never be legitimized in such a way.
Boris is one of very few of the current batch of leaders who have openly mocked and criticized the tiny poisoner. (I can’t actually think of even one other).
He said in 2015 : “Russian-backed forces are illegally occupying parts of Ukraine. Putin’s proxy army was almost certainly guilty of killing the passengers on the Malaysia Airlines jet that came down in eastern Ukraine.
“He has questions to answer about the death of Alexander Litvinenko, pitilessly poisoned in a London restaurant.
“As for his reign in Moscow, he is allegedly the linchpin of a vast post-Soviet gangster kleptocracy, and is personally said to be the richest man on the planet.
Journalists who oppose him get shot. His rivals find themselves locked up. Despite looking a bit like Dobby the House Elf, he is a ruthless and manipulative tyrant.”
Now that’s the sort of straight talking that I like, hence my annoyance at this strange decision.
