Russia Will Impose Counter-Sanctions on U.K. – Kremlin

Moscow will apply counter-sanctions against Britain, the Kremlin said Tuesday, after London blacklisted Russian officials for their alleged involvement in the death of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky.

“We can only regret such unfriendly measures,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

“Obviously the principle of reciprocity will be applied,” he added, without elaborating.

The 25 Russians included on the sanctions list drawn up by Britain’s Foreign Office were included for their alleged involvement in the death of Magnitsky.

Magnitsky, a tax consultant for British financier William Browder, died in prison of untreated illness in 2009 after accusing Russian officials of tax fraud of $230 million.

Russian officials to be targeted by the sanctions include Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the powerful Investigative Committee that reports directly to President Vladimir Putin.

The Russian Embassy in London on Monday denounced the sanctions, saying the country’s legal system was “independent” of the executive authorities and “guided by law alone.”

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Tuesday that the sanctions were targeting individuals involved in “some of the most notorious human rights violations of recent years.”

Britain also sanctioned a number of individuals from Saudi Arabia and North Korea.

London has accused Russia of “destabilizing” activities including the 2018 chemical attack that almost killed former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

Russia has rejected accusations that officers from its GRU military intelligence agency used a powerful nerve agent to poison Skripal in retribution for his work with British and other Western spy services.

  1. “Obviously the principle of reciprocity will be applied,” he added, without elaborating.

So you will ban some UK residents from visiting Russia, big deal! I doubt too many in the UK have assets in Russia, and if they do, they deserve to lose them.

Because they don’t have a clue what they can do. I don’t think they can do much that won’t increase their own suffering.

    Fucking dim-wits.

  3. They already sanctioned Russian consumers when they banned imports of food. But Putin’s oligarchs in the food industry made profits. Which oligarchs will he benefit now?

  4. Mr Magnitsky was beaten within an inch of his life several times by savages. His pancreas became acutely inflamed. The cunts let him die in agony. Probably gave the poisonous rodent a boner to think about it.

    • This statement from Raab won’t give him a boner.

“We will continue to try to expand this sanctions regime, and we are already considering the possibility that corruption could be added to the arsenal of funds available to us,” he said.

  5. “New British sanctions will exacerbate the crisis in bilateral relations, a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry told Interfax.”
Who in their right mind wants a relationship with a crime syndicate that tortures and murders at will and continuously?
    To reiterate the case:
“Mr. Magnitsky was an auditor at a Moscow law firm when he discovered what he said was a massive fraud by Russian tax officials and police officers.
“He uncovered the alleged theft of $230 million. After reporting it to the authorities, he was himself detained in 2008 on suspicion of aiding tax evasion, and died in custody on 16 November 2009 at the age of 37.”
Mr. Magnitsky was tortured and murdered for uncovering mafia dealings in – surprise – mafia land.
Mafia land should be handed the heaviest of sanctions to help oust the rotten-to-the-core criminals pretending to be government officials and law enforcement officers.

    • Hear Hear!
All the Moskali understand is steel….or lead. If you don’t give them that, then they will continue their evil ways and laugh at you. I would like to see democratic countries put a moratorium on business with Putin until he leaves office and his gas station meets certain criteria. For starters; stop all occupations recognized by the UNGA, block all government-sponsored media, suspend membership on the UNSC, PACE, et al,…you know the drill.
