Odd stats about covid 19
In Britain, so far 120 NHS (National Health Service) workers have sadly given their lives helping covid victims. It turns out that a staggering 75% of them are BAME (British term for black, African, Asian, ethnic minority). The reasons for this are not fully understood.
Similarly, in the US, the disease seems to be disproportionately affecting black people.
In France, hydroxychloroquine is reported as having very good results with covid patients, whereas in America, the opposite is the case.
In NYC, only 5% of seriously ill covid patients are smokers. (Mike; you were unlucky!). Mike reports that German doctors gave him nicotine as part of his successful treatment. The DM reports that it appears that nicotine dampens down the immune system response to the disease. Many victims suffer a cytokine storm, which is an overreaction of the body’s immune system. It can be deadly. It consists of a positive feedback loop between cytokines and immune cells. So, nicotine may soon become standard treatment.
On a positive note, scientists at Oxford university say they have a vaccine for the chicom bat virus and it is undergoing human trials now. They say that they are 80% certain that it will be ready to go into production in September. This could be the ‘game changer’ that everyone is waiting for. However, producing billions of doses will be an incredible challenge. But let’s hope that this job will not be factored out to the chicoms.
